Fabulous for Less Under $250: Transition Into Fall Style

We're nearing the end of summer which means the weather can be a bit unpredictable.  Dressing for cool mornings then dealing with serious humidity...

Many of you have already picked up some fall pieces.  So, right now is a great time to combine your summertime favorites with the new stuff.  Maxi dresses, skirts, colored, and printed denim--don't put them away just yet.

In this fab for less, I focused on a fall must--the denim shirt.  I wore a very similar look to the one below this weekend--mixing it with a maxi skirt and tank.  My family and I spent the afternoon shopping and later hung out with friends to watch a live band.  For events like this, I prefer a skirt and heels--it's casual, but still very feminine.  The shirt serves as a coverup, left unbuttoned to showcase a statement necklace.  This is a fantastic buy from H&M--the polka dotted detail is such a fun touch.  Hi-low skirts have been a summer favorite that I will be carrying into fall.  I love the way it sways as you walk and it's a fabulous style to show off legs and heels.  It's a bonus if you can find it in a pretty color like this Lulu's skirt--it really wakes up the outfit.  Accessorize with a stack of bracelets--chunky, studded, charmed, or friendship.  If you don't have a crossbody bag in your wardrobe, be sure to add it to your list.  I don't leave the house without it--having the power to be hands-free is priceless.

Style Tip: Opt for genuine leather bags if possible.  It's the secret to giving this budget-friendly style, a high-end look.

Back to School: Top 10 Fall Fashion Picks Under $150 for Mom

For many households, back to school shopping has already begun. In our family, that consisted of the last two weeks.  Most kids hate braving the malls going from store to store--trying things on.  But fortunately for us he gets it, "You have to look nice for the first day of school.  Can't be a slob.  People will get a bad impression of you."  Who knew he was listening?  The things you learn from a 10-year-old.

The first day back is always exciting.  Getting to see all your friends again, finding out if there are any new kids in class, and which teacher you get.

It's kind of like that for parents.  With each school year, it's a good reason for Mom and Dad to pick up a few things too.

Sorting out what to buy (according to the trends) can be tricky.  Don't we love that leather is so hot this season?  Okay, maybe not for everyone.  Easy for the 20-somethings to pull off, but does it make sense for those over 35?  Most often, the biggest fashion disasters occur when we dress either too young or too old for our age.  And keep in mind, not all trends are designed for everyone.  I wouldn't recommend leather pants if it doesn't suit your lifestyle.  As a fashion stylist, I love the idea of wearing leather for a date night and the many events around town. As a mom reaching 40, I'm open to trying new things.  Now, what you spend depends on your budget.  When it comes to splurging, the classics are always worth the investment.  Pieces like a well tailored jacket, pant, or white blouse will never lose their appeal.  That's where you want to put your money.

So with the kids done, it's time for Mom to shop.  Have fun with it.  Here are my top 10 fashion picks under $150.  Have a great school year families!!!

Style Inspiration: Sail Away

I would like to say we went sailing this weekend.  Truth is, any kind of boating-even a short jaunt to the other side of a theme park can spark nausea.  It's a cruel curse. Nonetheless, I love the ocean and escape to the beaches every chance we get.

The drive to Ventura alone is worth the trip.  It's a nice reprieve from the 405 and views of the mountains and orange groves are just beautiful.  Not to mention, the many roadside fruit stands along the way.  My family and I love discovering the areas we visit.  Had no idea there were mussels in the harbor--not so appetizing once you see them in their natural state.  For our son, finding hermit crabs was the highlight of his day--perfect ending to our Sunday.

"You look nice Mom," he says.  "The blue and white reminds me of the ocean."  I love it when he notices.

With the Summer Olympics underway, seems only fitting to show support for our athletes. What to wear...  I'm obsessed with this Wildfox Couture sweater.  Such a fabulous knit--love that it embraces the American spirit.

Style Tip: wear with denim cutoffs, wedge or summer booties.  In the fall, it's skinnies or leather pants.
